Andy Bloch is a professional poker player. As he admits, he has been playing with cards since he could remember, either with family or with his friends, and coming out a winner most of the times. He put school first and finished MIT, earning two electrical engineering degrees in 1992. Only after that did he take up professional poker. While juggling jobs and an occasional poker tournament on the weekends, it wasn’t until late 1994 – early 1995 that he quit his engineering job and focused on playing blackjack and poker full-time, which he only put on hold while he pursued yet another college degree, this time from Harvard Law.

Although Andy has never won a World Series of Poker tournament and has no bracelet to show off, he is still a worthy opponent, seeing as though he has reached the final table a staggering nine times, which can only lead us to believe that it is only a matter of time before he will win a large tournament. In one instance, at the final table of the 2006 WSoP, he finished second in the H.O.R.S.E. event, after playing heads-up against David “Chip” Reese. The battle lasted an amazing 286 hands, and was, in fact, the longest ever recorded in WSoP history.

Although Andy has never won a WSoP bracelet, he is no stranger to winning big tournaments. In 2006 he entered the Pro-Am Poker Equalizer (a poker tournament where celebrities play against professional poker players), in the ESPN-televized championship. He went on to win the tournament, and with it half a million dollars.

Andy currently plays online poker exclusively on Full Tilt Poker, and he is part of the famous “Full Tilt Team”, which consists of himself and thirteen other spectacular professional poker players:  John Juanda, Phil Gordon, Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Allen Cunningham, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Gus Hansen, Erik Seidel, Erick Lindgren, Jennifer Harman, Mike Matusow and Chris Ferguson.

As opposed to other famous professional poker players, who are involved in the online poker community by writing a couple of articles now and again, Andy Bloch is extremely tied to this environment.  He created (and currently manages) the World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker fan website, which has developed into a full fledged community, with players from across the globe giving each other advice and discussing the game.

Aside from his life as a professional player, Andy is involved in charitable events: all his winnings on Full Tilt Poker go to charity, and winnings from the 2006 WSoP also went to a charitable cause. Aside from this, he donated $100,000 to foundations in Darfur. He is an avid anti-war protestant, and in 2003 he was even arrested for allegedly crossing a police line at a protest. He put his lawyer skills to good use and represented himself, winning the appeal.

In the end, let’s hear a quote from Andy. When asked about dealing with fame and coping with the lack of a truly private life, he said: “The other day, we went to a BMW dealership to get our car fixed and test drive a car. When I got back home, I went online and played poker. One of the guys at my table said he just saw me at the BMW dealership since he was playing poker while waiting for his car to be fixed. It gets a little weird at times. Often, it’s fine though. I like my fans. I love it when a 65 year-old grandma comes up to you and wants to take my picture.”.
